Reviews

"Opal is a memorable figure, both because of her indomitable will and her innate values. Author Karl Drinkwater has created a protagonist who is driven by love to do the impossible. In a literary world full of characters driven by ambition, greed, vengeance, or any number of other motivations, reading about someone compelled by a pure love for her little sister is refreshing in so many ways."

"I love this series, having waited eagerly for each sequel, and this one was worth waiting for! But, as usual, there are a few surprises, one of which I still haven’t recovered from. Drinkwater is an expert at ‘expect the unexpected’, and keeps you on your toes as you follow Opal on her journey to find a home.
This series is more than simple sci-fi. In Opal, Drinkwater has created a female character you can believe in and who you care for from the beginning, and even that is surpassed by Athene, the AI on board the ship who creates a deep bond with Opal. Sometimes it’s not easy for an author to write a believable, relatable character of the opposite sex, but Drinkwater has achieved all that and more with Opal and Athene. I highly recommend this series and its side novellas, all fantastic reads that add to the richness of the story."

"Karl Drinkwater's epic Lost Solace quintet comes to a close with this fifth novel, Finding Solace, and I was delighted that it keeps up the high standards of world building and characterisation that I enjoyed so much in its predecessors. Drinkwater's storytelling never falters and I was kept engrossed in Opal's journey throughout the book.
I love how Drinkwater portrays complex scenes, such as the intense battle at the start of Finding Solace, in such a way that I can clearly understand what is going on without losing any of the necessary excitement. This is a rare talent in an author which I have appreciated throughout the Lost Solace series.
I don't often reread books, but there is so much to explore during the Lost Solace novels that I feel I could happily lose myself in them all over again, gaining greater understanding and spotting previously-missed connections each time. This is such an impressive series and I highly recommend the books to all science fiction fans. "
